Nourishing Hot Cocoa
It’s the Summer season but, after two years in the tropics, I am craving the fall and winter… cozy nights nestled by the fire, hot cocoa in hand. I have been on a quest to create a hot cocoa recipe that would be nutritionally balanced & NOURISHING- no sugar rushes, no guilt, just a comforting & filling treat you can enjoy any time of the year and by golly, I think I’ve created it! The secret ingredient? Bone broth.
I know it sounds weird, but I promise it’s amazing. Why bone broth, you may ask? Bone broth is incredibly rich in collagen which is an essential protein used alllll throughout the body. The protein from the bone broth, coupled with the fats from the whole milk used in this recipe, help to balance the carbs found in the raw sugar used to sweeten this yummy drink. This balance of nutrients prevents the sugar rush that you would get from the conventional, powdered hot chocolates. It’s amazing how some simple tweaks can take a “sugary drink” and turn it into a nourishing treat.
WHAT YOU NEED
1/2 c beef bone broth (my favorite)
1/2 c whole, grass fed milk (my favorite)
1 1/2 T semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 T organic, raw sugar
1 T raw cacao powder (my favorite)
few drops of pure vanilla extract
pinch of pure white sea salt
top with marshmallows
step 1
Add all ingredients (minus the marshmallows) to a small pot over medium heat.
step 2
Whisk until well combined & frothy.
step 3
When the drink begins to steam, remove from heat, pour into your favorite mug, top with marshmallows if you wish. Enjoy!
